Eye Examinations

You might be surprised that we allow around 45 minutes for your first eye examination with us and up to 1 hour for your children. Patients referred to us with complex neurological conditions such as post-concussion vision syndrome may require 75 minutes for an initial assessment.

Independent optometry practice

As an independent optometry practice, we are able to set our own scheduling to enable us to take the time to get to know you, your concerns and needs. If your eyecare needs are particularly complex then a second appointment may be required. You will not have to feel rushed and you will know that a thorough assessment has been performed.

Regular comprehensive visual examinations are recommended at least every two years and more often for the elderly or for those individuals for whom there are particular eye health or vision concerns. This is important to assess both your vision and the health of your eyes and to provide appropriate eye health and vision solutions for your individual needs.

Our examination process has changed dramatically over the years both in response to new research and treatment protocols as well as to take advantage of new instrumentation available.

Your comprehensive eye examination will include various tests and procedures to assess both an eye health check and evaluation of other aspects of your visual system’s function and may include the following:

1

Visual Acuity Assessment:

This determines how well you can see detail at various distances.

1

2

Refraction Test:

This determines your lens prescription by assessing how light refracts through your eyes.

2

3

Accommodation Assessment:

This measures how well your eyes adjust to focus at different distances.

3

4

Binocular Vision Assessment:

This evaluates how well the eyes work together as a team to create a single, clear image. Tests may include eye alignment, depth perception and eye coordination.

4

5

Oculomotility:

This evaluates how well your eye muscles are functioning and coordinating.

5

6

Evaluation of Eye Health:

Your optometrist will be assessing the overall health of your eyes, checking for conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and many others.

6

7

Slit Lamp Examination:

This involves using a specialised microscope to examine the structures of your eye including the cornea, iris, lens, and retina.

7

8

Retinal Examination:

This involves examining the back of the eye, including the retina and vitreous for signs of disease or damage.

8

9

Dilation:

It may be necessary to dilated the pupils of your eyes using eye drops to allow for a more thorough examination of the retina and optic nerve.

9

10

Digital imaging:

Photography and scans of the outside and inside of the eye may be performed to enhance examination as well as provide a record for future comparison.

10

11

Tonometry:

This measures the pressure inside your eye which is important for the detection and monitoring of glaucoma.

11

12

Visual Field Test may be recommended:

This checks your peripheral vision to detect any blind spots or abnormalities.

12

13

Visual Perceptual or Visual Information Processing:

This assesses how the brain interprets and utilises visual information, including tasks related to visual memory, visual discrimination and visual motor integration (eye-hand coordination). Higher-level visual functions such as visual attention, visual processing speed and visual-spatial skills may be assessed. Consideration of how vision integrates with other sensory systems such as proprioception (awareness of body position) and vestibular function (balance and spatial orientation) may be considered.

13

14

Patient Education:

Providing the patient with information about their visual system, any identified issues, and recommended interventions to empower them to actively participate in their vision care.
