Behavioural Optometry

We believe that the way you interpret what you see does not depend solely on how clear your eyesight is. Behavioural optometry is an expanded and more holistic area of optometric practice and a philosophy of eyecare that aims to incorporate the physical, neurological and developmental aspects of vision and applies to adults’ vision as well as children’s vision.

Consideration must be given to all your visual, visual motor and visual perceptual skills. In this way your behavioural optometrist will not only consider the remediation of any eyesight difficulties but also the benefits of prevention, protection and enhancement of your visual system to improve all aspects of your visual performance.

What is a Behavioural Optometrist?

Not all optometrists practice Behavioural optometry, which encompasses neuro-optometry and functional optometry. A behavioural optometrist has the same University degree as all traditional optometrists but has also completed specific training and post-graduate study in the field of behavioural optometry.

A Behavioural optometrist has a more holistic approach in the assessment and treatment of vision with an enhanced appreciation of visual efficiency and potential visual performance.

Behavioural Optometrists apply the understanding from decades of research and theory to explore the eye-brain connection and have an interest in treating functional vision problems, including difficulties with binocular vision (eye teaming), eye movements, depth perception, visual information processing and visual perception as well as visual deficits following brain injuries.
